Centuries before scientific soil research began, Native Americans appreciated the value of fish as fertilizer. While preparing the land for planting corn, the native people put a small fish in the soil. They poured fresh soil over the buried fish and planted a seed of corn. During the growing season, the fish slowly decomposed and fed the crop until harvest.
